Privacy Policy — Shiori EPUB Reader

Shiori EPUB Reader ("the App") is developed by Endofday. This Privacy Policy explains what information is collected when you use the App and how it is used.

1. Information We Collect

Information We Do NOT Collect

The App does not require you to create an account to read books.
The developer does not operate any server and does not receive, store, or have access to your books, reading data, or personal information.
The App does not collect your name or any personally identifiable information for the developer's own use.
By default, book files you open (EPUB, CBZ, PDF, FB2) are read locally on your device and are never transmitted. They leave your device only if you choose to enable the optional Cloud Sync feature described below, in which case they are synced with your own Google Drive (specifically under the "Shiori Library" folder or the private application folder).

On-Device AI, Translation, and OCR

The App's AI assistant (Gemma model), offline translation, and comic text recognition (OCR) run entirely on your device once their models are downloaded. Your questions to the AI, the text of your books, and recognized comic text are processed locally and are never sent to the developer or any developer-operated server. (If you explicitly choose the "Google Translate" action, the selected text is handed to the Google Translate app on your device.)

Pronunciation Dictionary Updates

To improve how the Thai text-to-speech voice pronounces words, the App periodically (about once every two weeks) downloads a small word-list file from shioriepubreader.com. This is a one-way download of a public file that is identical for every user: the request contains no account information, no device identifier, and nothing about you or your books. As with any internet request, our web host receives the connecting IP address in its standard server logs. The file contains only words — it is data, never program code, and it cannot change what the App does beyond how words are spoken aloud.

Any words you add to your own pronunciation dictionary stay on your device, and are included in your Google Drive backup only if you enable Cloud Sync.

Personal Library Servers (OPDS, Komga, Kavita, Calibre, WebDAV)

If you add your own library server, the App connects directly from your device to your server using the address and credentials you enter. These are stored locally on your device (and included in your own Google Drive backup only if you enable Cloud Sync) and are never sent to the developer.

Information Collected by Third-Party Services

The App displays advertisements provided by Google AdMob. AdMob may automatically collect certain device information to serve personalised or non-personalised ads, including:

Advertising ID (Android Ad ID)
Device model, OS version, and language
IP address (approximate location)
App usage events (e.g., ad impressions, clicks)

Analytics (Google Analytics for Firebase)

The App uses Google Analytics for Firebase to understand, in aggregate, which features and screens are used and which are not, so we can improve the App. This is anonymous usage analytics: it is not linked to your name or any account, and it does not include the content of your books, the text you read, or your bookmarks, highlights, or notes. Firebase may automatically collect:

App interaction events (for example, opening a screen or tab, starting text-to-speech, adding a bookmark, translating a paragraph, importing a book)
Aggregate usage durations (such as time spent reading or listening, in seconds) and the file format and metadata language of books opened — never their titles, authors, or content
A randomly generated app-instance identifier
Device model, OS version, and language
Approximate (country/region-level) location derived from IP address

This information is processed by Google and is available to the developer only as aggregated statistics (counts and trends) — never as individual profiles. It is never sold, and is used solely to improve the App. For details, see Google's Privacy Policy and how Firebase uses data.

You can turn usage analytics off at any time with the Settings → Usage analytics switch in the App — the App then stops sending analytics entirely.

2. Google Drive Cloud Sync (Optional)

The App includes an optional Cloud Sync feature that lets you back up your data to, and restore it from, your own Google Drive. This feature is off by default and is only used if you choose to sign in with Google from the Settings screen. If you never sign in, no data is ever sent to Google Drive and none of the following applies.

Google account access we request

Your email address (email scope) — shown in the app only so you can see which account is signed in. It is not stored or sent anywhere else.
Google Drive access — the App requests the following Google Drive scopes:
- https://www.googleapis.com/auth/drive.file — used to create and manage the "Shiori Library" folder in your Drive, where the App uploads the EPUB books and cover images you choose to sync and downloads them back to your devices. This scope only grants access to files and folders that the App itself created — the App cannot see, read, or modify any other files in your Google Drive.
- https://www.googleapis.com/auth/drive.appdata — used to back up and restore app settings, reading progress, bookmarks, highlights, and notes in your Google Drive App Data folder.
No other files in your Google Drive are accessed or modified outside the functionality described above.

What is stored in your Drive (only when you enable Cloud Sync)

App settings (font size, line height, theme, text-to-speech voice/speed/language, your text-replacement rules, and your pronunciation dictionary)
Reading data: per-book reading position, bookmarks, highlights, and notes
For books you explicitly choose to sync: the EPUB file and its cover image

How this data is handled

All of this data is stored directly in your own Google Drive (under the "Shiori Library" folder and the hidden app folder). It is transferred straight between your device and your Google account.
The developer has no server and never receives, stores, accesses, or processes this data. No human reads it.
The data is used solely to provide the sync/backup feature you requested. It is never sold, shared with third parties, or used for advertising or any other purpose.

Removing your data and revoking access

In the App you can sign out at any time, and remove individual synced books from Drive from the Cloud Sync screen.
You can revoke the App's access to your Google account at any time at myaccount.google.com/permissions. Removing the App from your Google account also deletes its hidden app-data folder and everything in it.

Limited Use disclosure. Shiori EPUB Reader's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

3. Permissions Used

`FOREGROUND_SERVICE` `FOREGROUND_SERVICE_MEDIA_PLAYBACK`	Keeps Text-to-Speech reading active when the screen is off or another app is in the foreground
`SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW`	Displays the floating TTS controls overlay so you can pause/skip without returning to the App. This permission is used only when you enable the floating TTS controls feature and can be disabled at any time.
`POST_NOTIFICATIONS`	Shows a TTS playback notification in the status bar while reading is active
`READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE`	Allows opening book files from your Downloads folder on Android 12 and below only
`FOREGROUND_SERVICE_DATA_SYNC`	Lets book imports, library-server downloads, cloud sync, and whole-book translation continue in the background under a progress notification
`WAKE_LOCK`	Keeps background work (TTS playback, downloads, translation) running while the screen is off
`REQUEST_IGNORE_BATTERY_OPTIMIZATIONS`	Optional: lets you exempt the App from battery optimization so long Text-to-Speech listening sessions are not stopped by the system

4. Local Data Storage

The App stores the following data locally on your device (and, only if you enable Cloud Sync, a copy in your own Google Drive as described in Section 2):

Book library (file paths, titles, authors, cover images)
Reading progress per book
Text replacement rules you create
App settings (font size, TTS speed, theme, etc.)
Bookmarks, highlights, and notes

This data is never transmitted to any developer-operated server. It is sent only to your own Google Drive, and only if you enable the optional Cloud Sync feature.

5. Children's Privacy

The App is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. The advertisements displayed by AdMob are subject to Google's families policy.

6. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
